Minimal Accessories: This outfit is best kept simple. If you’d like to accessorize, a wristwatch or leather cuff adds a touch of interest.

Suit or Blazer Set

Choosing outfits for your intimate boudoir shoot can be the most daunting step of the process.

The first thing to consider when choosing an outfit is to consider the theme of your photoshoot. Pinterest is a great tool for gathering images to create a mood board for your boudoir photoshoot. Start with typing in search terms like ‘boudoir photoshoot’ and look for images that you like. You can then narrow down your search terms further based on these images to come up with a concept for your shoot.

Pay close attention to the style of outfits the women are wearing, as well as any accessories they use such as hats or baskets.

Keep in mind that while boudoir photography is often associated with lingerie- you don’t have to wear lingerie at all.

The idea of boudoir photography is to wear whatever makes you feel confident and sexy- whether that’s wearing a full length dress or nothing at all!

Where Can I Buy Outfits?

A boudoir photoshoot is a good excuse to treat yourself to a few new outfits! Depending on your budget and the outfit style you’re looking for, there are plenty of retail options out there.

Shein is a great place to start for those looking to buy a variety of fun outfits on a budget. Their stylistic options are huge, and while their quality isn’t always the best- for a single use photoshoot, it’s perfectly acceptable. As they are an online retailer with quality being ‘hit and miss’, ensure you make your purchases well in advance before your photoshoot in case you need to exchange sizes. I’ve personally used Shein a lot, and you can find some real hidden gems.

For those seeking something on the higher end side, perhaps an outfit that will last more than a few uses (sorry Shein), I’d recommend Honey Birdette and Bras and Things. They both have a great range of higher quality lingerie in a variety of fun and sexy colours. They cater to a wide range of body types, giving women of all sizes a boost of body confidence.

Whether you prefer delicate white lace, a classic black set or a bold red- lingerie allows you to showcase your curves in all the right places. Consider different styles of lingerie such as a matching bra and panty set, a lace up corset or a silky teddy.

Cosy Jumper

For this type of look, I would play with a softer, more natural makeup and hair style to keep it casual. An oversized button down shirt can be a surprisingly sexy option for boudoir photography. Similar to the oversized jumper, it provides a more casual and relaxed look than traditional lingerie. Wear it over some sexy lingerie, a set of casual Calvin Kleins or Bonds- or nothing at all! You can wear the shirt unbuttoned or off the shoulder for a more flirty and sexy look. With the right backlighting, you can even use the shirt to create a silhouette to really show off your stunning curves.

Maternity Photoshoot in Torquay

As the sun dips low over the horizon, casting golden light across the landscape, there’s a calming atmosphere that unfolds on the beaches of Torquay.

At the gateway to the Great Ocean Road, Torquay offers a stunning backdrop for photoshoot. With its rugged coastal beauty and pristine waters, the compositional opportunities were endless for Gretel and Mitch’s maternity photoshoot. On this particular day, we were lucky to have a salty sea breeze creating a beautiful, hazy sea fog over the beach. We opted for a photoshoot at Jan Juc, utilising the beautiful west-facing cliffs as our backdrop that were softly diffused with backlighting.

For the outfit, Gretel opted for simple, yet elegant dresses of white and green, that complemented perfectly with the palette of the surrounds. An oversized beach hat elevated the style ever so slightly, to create a more candid and authentic atmosphere to the beach maternity photoshoot.

I aim for minimal direction for posing couples, with my main aim to capture the chemistry and raw emotion between the two. I always ensure I set the couple up in the correct orientation to the light and background, ensuring that they have enough direction to guide them between poses, but apart from that- I leave the smaller interactions up to them. Whether it’s a stolen glance or a playful laugh, every moment is captured and preserved for many years to come.

We alternated between a few different scenic backgrounds. From the vast coastline, to the secluded alcoves and beach shrub- Jan Juc beach offered a plethora of photographic opportunities. These memories captured during the beachside maternity photoshoot serve and a reminder of the love they shared during this special journey they embarked upon forever.

Welcoming a new life into the world is such an exciting, yet daunting experience. A maternity photoshoot is a great way to capture all the emotions and anticipation of this fleeting moment in time. One of the most common questions I get asked when for maternity shoots is ‘what should I wear?’

In this blog, we’ll explore a range of maternity dress ideas, including options for every price point, as well as the convenient option of hiring a maternity dress.

Choosing a Maternity Dress

When choosing a dress to wear for a maternity shoot, the most important thing to consider is if you feel comfortable. Pregnancy is already enough of a strain on your body, so ensure you don’t compound that with an outfit that is tight, or makes you feel hot. Many women opt for feminine, loose flowing dresses for a maternity shoot. Keep in mind that you don’t need to buy a ‘maternity’ dress for a photoshoot. You can simply buy a normal dress that has the ability to adjust it’s waist size- that way you can wear it again even when you’re not pregnant (which is better value for money).

Deciding on a style of maternity dress will depend on the type of photoshoot and location. Here are a few different styles of maternity dresses, including a few options at different price points.

Maxi Maternity Dress

Maxi dresses are one of the most popular options for a maternity shoot. Due to their flowing, feminine style- I tend to find maxi dresses work exceptionally well for beach maternity shoots. The floor length design provides ample coverage, while allowing freedom of movement for posing. Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen, to help regulate your body temperature, especially during an outdoor shoot.

I recommend a simple bikini in the colour of white or black (depending on the colour of your dress). Some when opt to wear nothing at all underneath, to really show off the raw and empowering process of transitioning into motherhood.

Boudoir Photography Style Ideas

When booking a boudoir photoshoot, one of the first questions your photographer will ask is for the style of photoshoot or the overall theme you’re trying to achieve. Usually this is provided by a ‘mood board’, which is a collection of images that can be created on image sites like Pinterest. But how do you ever come up with ideas to type into the search bar of Pinterest in the first place? I’ve come up with seven style ideas to help get the creative juices flowing for your next boudoir photoshoot.

Classic Boudoir Style

The most common type of boudoir photoshoot is a classic boudoir styled shoot. This is probably the first image that comes to mind when you think of ‘boudoir photography’. Think: black lingerie, suspender belt, stockings and heels. It’s a very timeless and classic look and these photos will remain as relevant in years to come as they are today. The lighting can be a mix of both flash and natural light, a combinations that aims to give an eye catching image. Poses are more seductive, yet still have a very candid and feminine feel about them.

Wedding Boudoir Style

Wedding boudoir photography is a boudoir shoot that some women do before their wedding day- either as a gift for their husband, or purely for a bit of self indulgence. The style is usually based around traditional wedding attire, and is generally a much softer and feminine look than classic boudoir photography. The colour pallet of the outfit is generally white- with soft lingerie, sheer dresses and floral accessories to elevate the style. Often veils and garters can be used to add a touch of elegance to the outfit. The lighting is almost always a diffused natural light, with a focus on always keeping the atmosphere soft and feminine.

Valentines Day Boudoir Style

Valentines day is a perfect excuse to give your lover a unique and special gift of you. A valentines day theme is super fun- and you can be as creative as you want.

With the main colour palette of Valentines day being red, consider delicate lace lingerie in shades of red, pink, or crimson to evoke the theme of passion and love. You can have fun with accessories: with red roses or big cuddly teddy bears.

The poses are playful and intimate, that capture the essence of this special day. Experiment with a variety of looks- from sweet and tender moments to sultry and seductive expressions. Whether cuddling up with plush pillows or sharing a loving gaze with the camera, the overall mood is to capture the emotions you share of your lover.

Beach Chick Style

We are starting to break out of what a ‘traditional’ boudoir photoshoot is with the theme of a beach shoot. Technically, a boudoir photo is taken in a woman’s private room or dresser, but I prefer to think of it more as a way of taking embracing a woman’s confidence and self lover- no matter where that is.

A beach shoot is one of my personal favourite styles of photoshoots. I may be biased since I live in Geelong, the gateway to some of Australia’s most stunning beaches. There’s something raw and natural about a beach photoshoot that can’t quite be captured in an indoor setting. Outfit wise: a simply bikini, one piece or long sleeve would suit this style perfectly. Try not to overdo it with the swimwear- stick of something simple and neutral coloured. A sheer dress can also create some beautiful feminine photos as it flows in the wind. Props such as surf boards, oversized beach bags and straw hats work wonders for a beach photoshoot.

Dominatrix Style

A dominatrix styled photoshoot draws inspiration from the world of BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism) and dominatrix culture. The imagery is based around the woman being a dominant figure. The outfit styling includes lots of leather, latex and usually thigh high boots- generally all in the colour black. This is often accessorised with dominatrix props like cuffs, whips and jewellery like neck chokers. The lighting is usually a lot more dramatic than other, more feminine styles of boudoir and the backdrop is usually dark. Posing is quite empowering and dominant, with photographed upward to create a figure of authority.

Enchanted Forest Boudoir Style

An enchanted forest theme is all about lush greenery, warm sunlight filtering through the leaves and the serene ambience of nature. The style is natural and earthy. For attire, delicate earthy toned bodysuits and lingerie work wonders for this type of shoot, as well as flowing chiffon robes to cover you. Using vintage books and floral crowns complement the image style perfectly. A soft and dreamy pose will work well amongst the natural background of the forest. If you can find a log or tree to lead against, this can evoke a sense of grace that brings this imagery to the next level.

Poolside Glamour Boudoir

If you’re after a bit of summer-babe vibe with a touch of luxury, a poolside photoshoot is perfect for you. This can be taken at any resort of hotel, most of the time they won’t mind if you’re taking pictures for personal use. Opt for a quieter time of the day like the early mornings, otherwise you’ll run the risk of other pool goers in the background of your shot.

For attire, a glamorous swimsuit and elegant sarong create a beautiful combination. Accessorise your outfit with statement jewellery pieces, hats and luxe sunglasses. Perhaps even order a cocktail from the bar to add some flair to your photos. If you’re on the paler side (like me), consider using a spray on tan- but ensure it’s done as close to the shoot day as possible to ensure it doesn’t go blotchy!

Finding a location for your boudoir photoshoot can be incredibly daunting, albeit exciting. While many boudoir photographers offer a fixed studio space, I prefer to tailor my location depending on the style of shoot, keeping the imagery dynamic and engaging.

Peerspace offers an incredible selection of studios, for all styles and budgets. Here are some of my favourite photoshoot locations in Melbourne for Boudoir Photography.

Apartment 26 by Anton Venoir Interiors, Prahran

This location is ideal for a boudoir photoshoot that is all about high class luxury.

There are a myriad of photo opportunities in this photo studio. The centrepiece of this hotel is the plush sitting area, with its sumptuous velvet sofas and ornately carved coffee tables. You will find this is the best setting for intimate moments of relaxation and contemplation. The bedroom creates an aura of romance, which invites you to strike a pose of effortless glamour and the headboard of the bed frames a stunning backdrop, painting a photo of old-world romance and refinement.

Often labeled “Petit Palais”, a private salon, where guests are transported to Paris to immerse in 18th century French culture, a birthplace for boudoir photography.

Piano cozy apartment, South Yarra

Music has the power to enhance and complement the perception of beauty in you. The focal point in this hotel is the piano, which sits against a backdrop of natural light. It sits against a backdrop of exposed brick walls and soft lighting. The polished surface gleams and adds a timeless sophistication to any photograph. The ebony finish of the piano contrasts beautifully with the colours of the surrounding décor, which arrests your attention.

For your photo session, you will find oversized cushions and cozy throws that encourage you to recline with ease and strike poses that capture elegance and relaxation. This room definitely captures your natural beaut for an elegant and refine boudoir photoshoot.

1930s Luxury Mansion, Balwyn

From the moment see the Grand Entrance to this mansion, you quickly realise this is a photo location like no other. The lounges, dining room and library provide graceful surroundings, whilst the balconies, garden courtyard and spacious grounds are perfect for your sumptuous photoshoot, offering an abundance of opportunities amidst natural light.

A photoshoot in a 1930s mansion, offers a unique and rich backdrop that will add a level of intrigue to your photographs. This setting, with all its intricate detailing, ornate mouldings, grand staircases, and lavish furnishings serve as remarkable backdrops to complement your grace and beauty and paint an exquisite image that will enhance the appeal of your completed photo session

Whimsical Edwardian in Parkdale

This Edwardian venue has a great sense of romance and luxury, making it an ideal location for a boudoir photoshoot. It includes three levels, lavished with gracious detail, such as a gracious camelot skylight and a large, ornate Chandelier. The property is meticulously and artistically designed with hand painted Rosette Ceilings, rich timber floors and an enchanting spiral staircase to 3rd floor, offering with sea views across the bay.

The Edwardian era was known for its elegance and beauty in architecture and is a perfect photography backdrop. With a blend of beauty, charm, and versatility, the Edwardian is an ideal venue for a memorable boudoir photoshoot. Here you can interact with the surroundings, making use of the unique elements of the venue into your poses and expressions, and this definitely will result in more dynamic and engaging boudoir photos.

Modern House with a Rustic Touch North Warrandyte

This stunning location features a timber lined balcony, providing rustic touches and rich earthy tones- a beautiful backdrops for boudoir photography. One of my favourite features of this location is the luxury, stone tiled bathroom.

The house features large, open windows allowing ample natural light to fill up the space. This creates a soft and subtle glow for your boudoir photos to really shine. Some of the outdoor features of this stunning property include a large pool, intriguing treehouse and outdoor living area with fire pit.

The combination of modern architecture and rustic charm that gives you a captivating visual contrast. This creates a striking backdrop for you and will add another level of depth and interest to your boudoir photoshoot. Warrandyte offers many natural parklands to explore. Such a natural backdrop will give you opportunities for outdoor photography, utilising elements of nature to create a sense of serenity and tranquillity in your imagery.
